Rentis

Agios Ioannis Rentis is a district in the Piraeus urban area, part of the Nikaia-Agios Ioannis Renti municipality, with a population of 15,411 at the 2021 census. It is historically associated with rail freight and light industry, anchored by its own railway station and one of Attica's main railway marshalling yards, and in recent years has also become home to large retail parks and big-box stores alongside its industrial character.

History

Agios Ioannis Rentis grew up around the Piraeus-Platy railway line, which gave it a passenger station and one of Attica's main marshalling yards, still visible in the district's layout today. Its position between Piraeus and central Athens, and its access to rail freight, made it a natural site for light industry and warehousing through the 20th century. The A1 motorway to Thessaloniki also passes through the area, reinforcing its role as a logistics and transport node rather than a residential or tourist destination. In recent years, large retail parks and big-box stores have been added alongside the district's older industrial and rail infrastructure.
